Union with Christ
With Ash Wednesday marking the beginning of the Lenten season we experience a sudden change in the church year. During Advent, Christmas and Epiphany we have been in what could be described as the Incarnation seasonal cycle of the church year. With the beginning of Lent we are in a new season (Lent through to Pentecost), the Paschal cycle.
Within the season of celebration of the incarnation of Christ we are drawn to the wonder and glory of Christ joining us in the world. During the Paschal cycle we will look to acknowledge the presence evil in the world, and our own sin.
Lent is the time we specifically set aside for a journey self-examination. This is a tough and tortuous road but in the words of St Augustine “Our pilgrimage on earth cannot be exempt from trial. We progress by means of trial. No one knows themselves except through trial, or receives a crown except after victory, or strives except against an enemy or temptations.”
But, in Christ that we are not alone as we are united to Christ. It is in union with Christ that we face temptation and receive salvation. Again in the words of St Augustine “Christ was tempted by the devil. In Christ you were tempted, for Christ received his flesh from your nature, but by his own power gained salvation for you; he suffered death in your nature, but by his own power gained life for you; he suffered insults in your nature, but by his own power gained glory for you; therefore, he suffered temptation in your nature, but by his own power gained victory for you.”
God Bless you
From the Vicar
Every April 25th we pay our respects to Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought in World War I, at Gallipoli in Turkey. One of the best ways we can show respect to our fallen soldiers is by understanding the breadth of Anzac history.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows (Psalm 23)
We are all called to accept Jesus and proclaim the Good News of the Gospel to all people.
