An introduction

From the Vicar

Let me introduce you to someone…

Thomas Francis Truman

Born Tue 9th August

4565g (10lb 1oz)

Every birth is a miraculous gift from God, and we are very thankful for God’s graciousness through these strange, sleep-deprived, still-sniffling, weeks. We’re also very thankful for the community of the saints (that’s you!) It is such a witness to the power of Christian community to have been blessed with such spiritual and practical support from you. As always a huge thank you to everyone for their prayer and care for us. And thank you to those who covered for me during my time away both for sick leave and paternity leave. Special thanks to Rev Neil S for covering Sunday services, Margrett S for taking school services, and our tireless wardens Barb W and Anna W for leading vestry and keeping all the other cogs turning.

I’ve felt a bit of a hermit for the last three weeks, having necessarily been focused on my own family. But I’m aware that much has happened and is happening in our world, our community, and in our lives. It reminded me of a word, “Sonder”. I came across many years ago on the wonderfully named website Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. Sonder is defined like this… the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.

So, while I am very aware of my own life’s complexities at the moment, please know that I’m conscious that everyone has their own complexities and joys and sorrows and struggles and celebrations. May you know God’s presence in those moments, and please share them with others in the congregation. You might find, like I have, the beauty of Christian community there to support you.
