St Mary
On Friday we celebrated of the Feast of St Mary the Mother of Jesus. We know from the Gospel according to Luke that Mary was a young Jewish girl living in Nazareth. When a messenger (an angel) from God announced that she was to be the mother of the Son of God, it is Mary’s response to this extraordinary announcement “Be it to me according to your word”, her life of obedience and faithfulness to God, that gives us an example to strive for in our own lives.
In the Gospel according to John we read that at the time of Jesus’s death he commended the care of his mother St Mary to St John. There is no certainty where St. Mary lived after the death of her son on the cross. It is probable that her house was in Jerusalem, where a tomb for her can still be visited.
There is a tradition placing her in Ephesus, which could result from the fact that she had accompanied St. John in his travels and temporarily resided in this city. There is no material evidence of this possibility.
But it is in the hills near Ephesus that there is the House of St. Mary where Mary is said to have lived in hiding after her Son’s death. Even though there is no archaeological evidence to support the claim, having been blessed to have visited The House of St Mary, I found that for me it was an immensely powerful place with God truly present.
God bless you
From the Vicar
Every April 25th we pay our respects to Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought in World War I, at Gallipoli in Turkey. One of the best ways we can show respect to our fallen soldiers is by understanding the breadth of Anzac history.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows (Psalm 23)
We are all called to accept Jesus and proclaim the Good News of the Gospel to all people.
